Just because you’re on a keto diet doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some tequila. Several studies have found that the Agave plant strengthens immunity, improves bone health and fights dementia.

But does tequila have carbs?

This post will show you everything you need to know about consuming tequila on keto. I will address keto tequila cocktails, some alternatives and what alcoholic drinks to avoid.

Eating tequila on a Keto diet: yes or no?

Tequila is keto friendly because it contains zero carbohydrates. Although it will not increase blood sugar levels, alcohol consumption will affect ketosis.

To understand how this works, we must first know how alcohol is processed in our body. This process is very easy to understand.

Your body uses alcohol dehydrogenase to convert alcohol to acetaldehyde. This acetaldehyde is a very toxic compound and your liver will always give it priority over anything else.

So because your liver stops everything from focusing on processing this chemical, it stops producing ketones and burning fat for a short time.

In any case, alcohol just stops burning fat; it’s not bad enough to eat a high carb meal. When you eat carbs, you restore your glycogen levels in your liver, and your body needs to clear up the damage caused by carbs and start from scratch.

Another way that tequila or any alcoholic beverage can affect your health is through inflammation. This is because alcohol is oxidative. It puts stress on your liver, leading to inflammation. So, if you drink alcohol regularly, you will trigger chronic inflammation, which many doctors consider to be the root of all diseases.

Some of these adverse health effects include:

  • Fatty liver disease
  • Cancer
  • Heart disease
  • Diabetes

But that doesn’t mean you should avoid keto alcohol. Alcohol in limited quantities is not harmful, and medically revised studies show that it offers health benefits.

Tasty, Keto-friendly Tequila cocktails

If you don’t feel like drinking shots of tequila, here are some delicious drinks you can make without getting rid of ketosis.

Keto Tequila Slammer

Traditionally, Tequila Slammer is a hit. You do this by taking a shot glass and filling half with tequila and the other half with Sprite. Then you will cover your hand over the top of the glass, hit it on the table and it will start to flicker. Consume directly before you run out of food.

But let’s add a twist.

We turn it into a cocktail because when you make keto, you want to limit alcohol consumption. So instead of drinking the drink, sip it, enjoy it, and drink less alcohol.

You will only need three ingredients:

  1. A glass of rocks with a few ice cubes
  2. Pure agave tequila
  3. Tonic water without sugar or Sprite Zero

So pour a dose of tequila into the Rocks glass and top it up with sugar-free tonic water or Sprite Zero. You can even add lemon juice as it gives the drink a unique flavor.

Margarita Keto with strawberries

This mixed drink is the perfect summer option because it is refreshing and fruity. To make a keto margarita, you will need:

  • White Tequila
  • Pineapple strawberry sparkling water
  • Himalayan pink salt
  • Ice
  • Two strawberries

A keto margarita contains only 75 calories and three net carbohydrates.

First, fill the glass with ice and add the strawberries. Then cut a lime in half and squeeze it on the edge of a second cup. Take some pink Himalayan salt, sprinkle it on a plate and salt the edge of the glass.

Add a dose of tequila and sparkling water over the strawberries. Now pour the cocktail into the second cup, garnish with some lime and enjoy.

Low carb Tequila Sunrise

This Tequila Sunrise is another delicious summer keto drink. But you will usually use orange juice and grenadine syrup filled with sugar.

But for this keto recipe, all you need to do is:

  • Tequila Blue Agave
  • Sugar-free orange juice
  • Sugar-free pomegranate syrup

Tequila Sunrise contains about three to five grams of carbs, depending on the low-carb orange juice you use.

It’s also super easy to do. Take a glass and fill it with ice. Then pour a dose of tequila, three ounces of low-carb orange juice and half an ounce of pomegranate syrup. Stir and enjoy!

Now that we know how to make keto tequila cocktails, let’s look at other keto alcohol alternatives.

Other Keto-Friendly Alcohol Alternatives

When you do keto, don’t just look at your carbs. You want to compare the number of carbs in your drink with the percentage of alcohol.

For example, some low-carb beers contain four grams of carbohydrates. But the alcohol content is so low that you should drink a lot to get drunk. And by then, you’ve already got rid of ketosis.

So here are some tequila keto alternatives.

rum

Any strong drink you can sip is a good option for keto. Strong liqueurs do not contain carbohydrates, and the alcohol content is so high that you do not need much. For example, you can get rum and just add some ice with a lime on the side.

Black rum is perfect for anyone on a ketogenic diet, as you don’t have to pour mixtures.

Vodka

Vodka is another keto option because it does not contain carbohydrates. If you go out with friends, drink vodka and diet soda because, unlike shots, you can enjoy and enjoy it.

The more you enjoy a drink, the less alcohol you consume, which is good news for your health goals because you want a moderate amount of alcohol to lose weight.

The possibilities with vodka are also endless. As long as you use low-carb mixers, you can enjoy almost any mixed drink. Some of my favorites include:

  • Vodka and diet soda
  • Low carb vodka and lemonade
  • Vodka with water garnished with lemon or lime

Vinuri Keto

Many companies like Dry Farm Wines make wine for those who diet keto. It does not contain carbohydrates, sugar, additives or preservatives, so it will not get you out of ketosis and will not trigger inflammation.

The alcohol content in Dry Farm Wines is also relatively low, so you can enjoy and enjoy a drink without consuming too much alcohol.

Some of my favorite wines from Dry Farm Wines are:

  • Chianti
  • Limestone riesling
  • Cabernet Franc

You will also notice that after drinking a significant amount of Dry Farm Wines, you will not feel the hangover that you usually do. This is due to the zero content of sugar, additives and preservatives.

This makes clean wines a perfect drink for anyone on the go.

The worst alcoholic beverages for those on a Keto diet

If you have been drinking tequila for a while and are looking for an alternative, avoid drinks such as beer and sugar cocktails. This is because they have a lot of carbohydrates and additives.

Beer contains 13 grams of carbohydrates per box, and if you drink three beers, it means almost 40 grams of carbohydrates. Even though low-carb beers may be more keto-friendly, you need to drink so much to get drunk and you’ll increase your carb intake.

Sugar cocktails like Bloody Mary, Moscow Mule and Cosmopolitan are worse than beer. These drinks contain over 15 grams of sugar per cup. So you want to avoid them at all costs.

We also have recipes for old-fashioned keto, keto martini and a keto margarita.

The last word on Keto tequila

Eating tequila with a high-fat diet is a keto-friendly way to have fun with friends and loved ones. Pure Agave Tequila does not contain carbohydrates and sugars due to its distillation process. If you don’t like drinking tequila directly, use low-carb blends like Sprite Zero.

However, moderate alcohol consumption is key. Excessive drinking triggers inflammation and puts unnecessary pressure on the liver, leading to an increased risk of fatty liver disease and other chronic conditions.
